Gypsy Woman Final Cut
After a lot of idea changes, and re-shooting footage many times due to location problems and camera problems, I finally finished my music video. Overall I am happy with my finished product, more so the end half of my video, as this section is when I have had more experience with the camera and knew more what I wanted my video to look like. Therefore, I think this section is stronger in terms of camera shots and I varied what I was filming, as here I included different train sections to link back to the beginning and locations of my performer dancing. I particularly like the footage of my performer dancing against the red brick wall, for example between 1.30 to 1.35 as I think this looks very 90's. The idea from my feedback session about adding my performer as the homeless person as an ending also works really well, and I think this gives my video more meaning.
Parts of my video I would improve was to add another performer. I think by adding another person for my audience to watch would make it more interesting and keep them entertained.

Music Video Changes
My final product is very different to my first idea and plans
1) Location
I stuck with my first idea of using train stations as one of my Locations to film my music video. However, the idea of filming on the platform didn't work as well as it was in an open space and it was difficult to not capture train signs. However, before reaching the platform I noticed a small, dark and dingy alley way in South Ruislip Station, which was perfect. Here I filmed a lot of my music video.
Another original idea was using London. I didn't use this location as much as I planned, but did film my performer dancing in the middle of the busy street and in a small London Corner. I decided not to use London as much, as in the end I preferred the rougher areas such as South Ruislip Station's alley way and against fences and brick walls. This idea still fitted in with the idea of a homeless person as they beg in these types of areas.
2) Stairs
A big idea I wanted to include was my performer dancing on the stairs in Piccadilly Circus and on New Look in Oxford Street. This was to be a homage to the Spice Girls routine in their Wannabe video. I did film this on New Look stairs, however because I was wary about being caught as I was filming on private property, I wanted to film this footage as quick as possible. This means that video didn't end up as good as I had hoped. Instead I used the stairs in the train station, which still fitted in well with the idea of a rough location. It wasn't the full Spice Girls routine like I had hoped, but I did take ideas and dance moves from it.
3) Fish Eye Lens
I wanted to use a fish eye lens, as I thought this was very 90's. However, I trialled this lens on a train station platform which was a very open location, however I decided I did not want to use this effect throughout as I wasn't impressed with the look it created. Instead I preferred just a normal lens. Although, I did include one piece of footage using the fish eye when my performer was miming in a small and confined area, and that is why I think it worked better.
4) Ending
To add more depth to my video , I added a short piece of footage of my performer begging on the streets. Throughout the video, the audience believes my performer is singing about a homeless person she knows as she refers to the homeless woman as 'her' and 'she'. However, we realise that she has been singing about herself. This is a RESTRICTED NARRATIVE as the audience doesn't find out all the information at first, and the narrative of the video is very mysterious.

Feedback Changes
The Ending
After the feedback, I went away to film an ending for my video to give it more of an narrative. One of the suggestions was to have my performer the homeless woman.
I used a alleyway to film Vicky begging on the streets. I styled her the same, as homeless people do not have the option of a change of clothes, however we decided on using a blanket to cover her shoulders to keep her warm. We also used a tin can as a prop to be the money box where people drop change into.
This is the first time I used another person in my video. I wanted to film someone dropping money into the tin can, however I just wanted to from the waist down. I styled Vickys sister to look very smart in smart shoes, trousers and a fitted coat, and then she walked past Vicky who was sitting on the ground leaning against a brick wall and dropped change into her can.
I am really happy with these shots, as I now think it adds a twist to my video rather than it being just a performance video.

I also filmed shots of a moving train from both inside the carriage and while standing on the platform. This idea was inspired too by a suggestion made in the feedback session of being reminded about previous locations that I had used.

Peer Review
Although my video still wasn't complete, I decided to show what I had produced to my class mates to receive feedback. This was the first time most of them had seen what I've been working on in the previous weeks, which was useful as there's more chance of them spotting any mistakes I've made and where as I know the main message and narrative of my music video, it was interesting to see what they thought it was.
Overall the feedback was very encouraging. People commented on the styling, location and good directing of my performer. They thought it was clear on what my performer was told to do rather than free styling.
One piece of advice that I will definitely work on and use was to include a twist in my video to give it more of a narrative and story rather than a simply dance based performance video. An idea that was mentioned was to have a shot at the end of my performer begging on the streets. This would shock the audience as originally you believe my performer is singing about a homeless woman she knows and the song is in second person and refers to the homeless woman as 'her' and 'she'. However, at the end we find out she is singing about herself. I believe this idea works really well and fits in with my video, as I have already included footage of my performer waiting against a wall or fence. At first we don't know what or who she is waiting for and this adds some tension and questions, however by including this ending, we know that she is begging.
This idea too fits in with Andrew Goodwin's narrative theory. He states that narratives link to the lyrics and tempo of the music. A repeated lyric in the song is ‘she’s just like you and me but she’s homeless’ and this is a strong message that you wouldn’t be able to tell this woman was homeless, as she gets up and acts the same as an ordinary person. Music Video - Stage Three
After researching other music videos, I realised that my opening wasnt powerful enough. I recieved a lot of inspiration from an existing media video that was made by a student in the 2011/201 school year.
This video has a strong opening that instantly grabs your attention. However, this works so well because the beginning of the song is very punchy.
The beginning of Gypsy Woman isn't as powerful, so don't think I could recreate this type of opening, however it did influence me to change my video techniques. I had orginally been inserting clips, and fading them in and out after one another. By I wanted to add some twists, cut, copy and overall mix around the footage.
The beginning of my video was orginally my performer dancing on the stairs, with the lyrics 'A 90's Production' 'Crystal Watts in' 'Gypsy Woman' appearing one after the other over the top of my footage. However, after watching this video, to me this seemed too much like a home video rather than an A-Level coursework piece. I copied the first 00.00.00.01 seconds of the footage of my performer beginning to walk down the stairs and pasted it twice to create a staggered jumpy effect. After this I had a completely different effect on her dancing on the stairs, then returned back to the previous footage and we see her continue to walk down the stairs.
Later on in my video, I also copied and pasted a few other 00.00.00.001 seconds of footage, so other videos were more jumpy and edgy.

Music Video - Stage Two
After the snowy weather conditions made it difficult to film this weekend, I didn't have any new footage to use as I hoped I would have. However, I was still able to produce some worthwhile work.
I re-watched the footage that I orginally wanted to film again, and decided that there was at least two clips that I could use. I inserted these and had to sync them with the song, so when my performer mimes to the lyrics, it is in time with the song. All the other clips I inserted, I positioned them along the timeline for when I want them to play. This now means that I have a few gaps that I will need to fill with the new material I film.
At first I found it very difficult to move the clips along the timeline, as at some points I found they wouldn't move to exactly where I needed them to be. Instead of moving a clip a small section so it fitted in with the music better, it was a case of moving it quite a bit or nothing. However, I discovered that you could view the production line in 'Expert View', whereas I had been using 'Quick View'. There are a lot more technical aspects in expert view that I will not use and do not need, however now I can move a clip to exactly where I need it to be, even if it is just one second along the timeline.
I am hoping to record my new footage this Friday. Instead of travelling up London, I am planning on going to just South Ruislip Station and recording against the wall or on the stairs. Music Video - Stage One
To create my music video I am using the program Adobe Premier Elements, which is a recommended program to use. I have never used this before, however I have used Movie Maker a lot in the past, and it isn't that much different, so it didn't take me long to know how to use it.
A feature that I have discovered in Premier Elements is adding effects to my video. One of these being a Vintage effect, which re-colours your clip to a old sepia tint and this is perfect for the feel of my video. I originally wanted black and white, but this effect is more suitable.
After inserting my music into Elements, and started to sync my videos along with my music, I soon discovered a problem. During the recording of my performer miming, it works well, however when merged with the song in Elements, which is much louder and much clearer, than when it was played off my phone, it doesn't look realistic. As I am not happy with my recordings of my performer singing, this means I will have to film them again. However, this time I know more what I want, and know that she needs to exaggerate and pronunciate her words so that it is very over the top. Also, looking back on my videos, I've discovered that some ideas, such as recording using a fish eye lens, doesn't work as well as I hoped, so next time I will just use a normal lens. I know think that it is more important for my footage to look professional and real, rather than fancy effects and poor footage.

First Day of Filming
Sunday the 16th was my first day of filming. I took with me the camera and fish eye lens, plus the tripod for any shots I needed to take with a steady hand.
Before we travelled up London, I arranged to meet my performer, Vicky, at hers so I could style her using inspiration from my research about what fashion was like in the 90's. Together we chose baggy trousers, a crop top, checked shirts and big denim jacket. We decided on dark makeup and a high ponytail with a scrunchie. I was very pleased with how she looked, and I am glad that I had done the research before hand as I knew exactly what could be considered 90's.
We got the train from South Ruislip Station so we could travel up to Marble Arch station on the Central Line. However, we found that the tunnel in the station and the steps up to the platform were perfect for filming. They had the urban edge and we decided to take some photos ready for my digipack and magazine advertisement. I filmed some dance sequences on the stairs and Vicky mimed the first part of the song on the chairs on the platform. We decided the best way to do this is for Vicky to hold the phone that has the song playing and she mimes along. This worked well until we were in more busy areas.
We also decided to film on the train, however this proved to be more difficult as the train was moving. We tried to use the tripod, but I was trying to achieve a low angle shot, and the tripod didn't angle high enough. Also some shots are in the daylight, where as others are darker when we were underground, though hopefully this shouldn't matter if I don't put these two shots together.
Up London I managed to film some shots of Vicky dancing between people in the streets. We first thought that this might now work as people would walk in front of the camera or try and be filmed, however the opposite happened. Instead, when people saw the camera, they would separate, leaving Vicky on her own in the street. I also followed my plans and did film on Vicky doing the Spice Girls Routine on New Look Stairs. I'm still not sure how these turned out, and will know better when I put it to music, however I am pleased I got to do this, and didn't have any problems that I thought I would have.
Through out the day I took many pictures and short videos of Vicky dancing to fill up space in my video as there is a lot of instrumental moments in my chosen song. I believe that the best shots happened when she was unaware when I was filming as it was very natural.
I didn't realise how difficult it would be, as a problem that did occur was I ran out of ideas and it was hard to achieve some of the shots that I had imagined. However, this could be helpful and this now means that I know what it is like to film, and I can now think more about what I need and what is achievable. Although first I need to start making my video with the shots I have already taken, so see what needs to be improved and this will definitely give me more ideas of what is needed. The biggest problem for me is that I couldn't imagine what it would look like, so it was more of trial and error and hoping for the best.

Itinerary
12.00
When I arrive at the station I would like to start filming the first verse. This would be a close up shot of my performers face singing along with the lyrics. I have chosen to use a close up as when the song starts, the music is very calm before the chorus begins. So I will edit the film to zoom out when the music's tempo increases and then we can see more of the artist, her surroundings and more action will begin.
While here I will also film my artists singing to the chorus against any train that speeds past her. I have chosen to use a selection of mid shots from the waist upwards, and with the camera angled at a low angle, so my performer is looking downwards.

This is when I choose to film on the train. Here I will film my artist performing many separate dance sequences to use through out. This would be wide shots, as I can see the full routine that my artist is performing.

At New Look, I have decided to take multiple shots of my performer dancing on the stairs. This would be wide shot at a slight low angle, so you can see my artists body to take advantage of her styling and her dance moves. You will also be able to see the full stairs, however not so much that it is noticeable it is New Look. This means I have second options if I am not happy with my footage. This saves me time having to travel back to London on a different day to film again if I am not happy with what I have taken. This could cause a problem as there is a chance that the weather of styling will not look the same on a different day.
While on New Look Stairs I will also take many posed for photographs for my digipack covers which I can choose from.

Likewise, while on the steps at Piccadilly Circus I will film many separate dance routines using a selection of different shots and many posed photographs.

After the shots review, I will hopefully have time to correct any shots that I am not happy with on the train back home. I am hoping it will not be too dark, but these will only be corrections rather than shooting the whole sequence again so it may not matter.
While walking to different locations I will film in the street using a fish eye lens of my performing weaving in and out of the people. This would be a mid shot to take full advantage of the fish eye lens, so my performer is the main focus and there isn't too much of the people in London in my footage. These shots will be used nearer to the end of my song as there are long instrumental parts that means no miming in needed.
I have also decided to find a shutter background in London which I don't think will be hard to find, to film the second verse. I will fit this in during the day, and shouldn't take too long as there is no dance routine, its just a midshot using a fish eye lens.

My Pitch
I created a pitch that I presented that included all the information that would sell my video to a potential music company. This experience helped me a lot as this was the first time I heard feedback about my idea for my music video.
After my presentation, there was a question and answer session. People in my class highlighted problems that I hadn't previously thought about.

Styling
I will hopefully create this outfits from my own and my friend's wardrobe, as 90's style hasn't changed that much to current day.Some of the fashion has even returned, such as crop tops and baggy trousers, and although we might wear them differently nowdays, I can style the clothes to how they used to wear them.
Makeup and hair will be done before we leave to travel up London, as I will have the right equipment at home, but it won't be a struggle to take makeup supplies with us up London for touch ups when needed as they don't take up much room.
Unfortunatly if it does rain, I may decide to stop filming depending, as I don't watch the lens on the camera to become wet which will ruin the effect and filming. Also it does mean my performer (and me!) will to get wet and this isn't a look that I would like in my video.
Lyrics analysis
The main message of this song is about a woman who is just like any ordinary woman, however she is homeless and living on the streets.

The Steps Dance Routine
Inspiration for my dance sequence on different steps comes from the Spice Girls Video 'Wannabe' where they too performed a dance routine on some stairs.
Their routine begins at 1.30 and it's very simple yet effective. I may even use some of their dance moves in my routines, as this is the kind of look I would like to recreate, and the Spice Girls were a popular band in the 90's, so their 90's moves fit in with my video.
One of the places I would like to film my routine is on the stairs leading to NewLook - the clothes shop in oxford street. These stairs are mirrored, so there very hiphop and suitable for dancing on.
Another place would be Piccadilly Circus steps. As there is lots of room on these stairs, I think I may be able to put together a routine, where my performer moves around the steps more.

Oxford Street can be easy to get to and will take around 45 minutes to an hour. From my nearest station, which is Ruislip Gardens to Marble Arch station is one train ride. I will then have to walk from Marble Arch station to 500 Oxford Street which takes 5 minutes. As I will also want some shots in the train station and on the train, I can just film these before we get the train.

I don't think 90's fashion is that hard to achieve, as most of the styles such as big denim jackets and baggy trousers have been coming back into fashion. High Ponytails are easy to do, and make up can easily be done. I think I can recreate the 90's style by looking through my own and my friend's wardrobe and combining our clothes together. One thing I will need to buy is an old hair scrunchie like they used to wear in the 90's, however they sell these at pound stores, so won't cost a lot.
Problems

This could cause a problem as some of them may not simply walk past, they may stop and look, or even try and be in the shot. Hopefully, I'm choosing to shoot my video in the week, rather than a weekend so this limits the amount of people as most should be at work or school. Also people in the background probably won't be styled in the 90's theme, however I personally don't think this will be a problem, as London in such a unique place with lots of different styles and types of people, and the style of the 90's compared with the modern day hasn't changed that much.

Firstly I am going to try and risk it, as I won't be filming there for very long, and it will be only me and my performer so we shouldn't take up too much room. Target Audience
There are two potential target audiences for my music video.
One of these would be the mid generation who were in their teenage/ young adult years in 1991 when this song was first released. As it is house/dance song, it would most likely of been played a lot in clubs and bars, and was in the charts which teenagers love to keep up to date with.
The second potential audience would be teenagers nowdays. Most teenagers know songs from previous years as well as current hits. Also it is very common now for artists to remix old songs and put a modern twist to them. An example of this would be Flo Rida's I Cry, which uses Brenda Russel's song Piano in the Dark which was orginally released in 1988. This song has proven very popular among the younger audience and reach number one.
I would want all my products to appeal more to the younger generation, and I will do this by using a young female performer so young girls can relate to her and look up to her. They would want to be like her and copy her style and movements. Young boys would develop a star crush on her, so would watch her video and be attracted to pictures of her so they can admire her.

My Final Idea
I have decided to create more work for myself, and change my idea once again, as I wanted a video that had more of a structure, rather than just lots of shots put together with no real styling. I have decided to move on from Rihanna, and have chosen a much older song in the 90's - Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless). It's a real dance song, and I think I can have much more fun with this song and really exaggerate on the styling. I decided on this song after watching the TV show 'The X Factor' after a band performed it. I then instantly researched it on Youtube, and I like the beat and dance feel to it.
The main message of this song is about a woman who wakes up and is like everyone else, even though she is homeless and sings for money. For this I would like a performance based music video, with my main actress singing along to the verse lyrics to the camera. However, the whole song doesn't have much words - just the repeated 'La Da De La Da Da' so for this I will use a dance sequence, so this will be partly concept based and performance based, as she is still putting on a performance but not actually singing the words.
I am still going to use some of my previous ideas of shooting in black and white and the old camera effect as it's a 90's music with 90's fashion so I still believe the old black and white and vintage feel will work well. Also I'm still keen on having some lyrics shown in the video, like in the homemade Cheryl Cole video, however instead of having these written down, I may try and overlap these with the video so they appear faintly over the top.
Location
The main location I will like to use is the busy streets on central London. I've decided on London, as the song is about someone being homeless and London is a place that is known for people to be living on the streets. I will also like to use some in a train station where my performer is infront of a moving train, so we can see it driving past her, while she is standing still performing. I can use any train station to film this, so this wouldn't be a problem.
On Oxford Street, there is a large NewLook clothes shop with silver steps leading up to the store. This would be good to film a dance sequence on. Other steps I would like to use are those in Piccadilly circus as these are right in the busy centre and as they are in a round, they will be good to use.
Actors
I will have one female performing the song, as the song was originally sung by a female so it makes sense to have one performer. This will be a close friend of mine, as we spend most of our time together so we will have no trouble organising a time to meet up and film together. Also as she is a close friend, we are very comfortable around one another, so I won't feel awkward telling her what to do and styling her, and she won't feel embarrassed to perform in front of me. When we were younger, we have made home-made music videos before, so we work well together.

My Second Idea
As Rihanna's song 'Do Ya Thing' contained swearing, I've decided to change song and therefore my idea to a more suitable song. I still would like to do a Rihanna Song as I enjoy listening to her music so have decided on a more subtle and chilled song called ' We All Want Love'. Again, this currently doesn't have a music video for it, so I won't be influenced by a current video.
The main message of this song is saying that everyone deserves to love someone and be loved by someone back. Rather than producing a performance based video which is the idea I had previously, I will know like to produce a more narrative based video in the form of a montage of clips showing a couple in love. I may still use some performance, as I would like some lyrics to be sung to the camera, but rather than it looking like the singer is giving a performance, I would want it to look like they are casually saying the lyrics.
I am still going to use some of my previous ideas of shooting in black and white and the old camera effect. Also I'm still keen on having some lyrics written down and filmed, like in the homemade Cheryl Cole video. Overall I would want my music video to look like an old film of a montage of clips showing people in love and their story.

I don't think I should shoot the video in one location as I want to create a video that show is all about a couple's memories, so I will need to use a variety of places they have been. Some of these places will be local such as walking down the street, however some will be up London.
Ideas that I currently have is of them rolling around on grassy fields, as this is them having fun and doing cheesy things that couples do. I will be able to achieve this using Northala Hills situated in Northolt, which is a 10 minute car journey from my current location.
Actors
I would like to use one boy and one girl in my video to make a couple. I was deciding to use many different couples, about five, acting out their love story, however this may be more difficult as I will have to find suitable times to arrange to film all these people. Also, boys are more reluctant to be involved, so it will be much easier to find one boy rather than five.
For the performance part of the video, I will have my actress singing lyrics as Rihanna is female, so it makes sense for her to sing lines.
Styling
I don't want an expensive or unique clothing to be used in my video, just casual clothing that will be provided by my actor and actress. This makes the video more natural. It won't cost anything easier, as no new clothes will be needed.
As it's getting near Christmas, I will like some shots of my actor and actress wrapped up in Christmas clothing, such as coats, scarfs and gloves, as this will make them more cosy and they can be huddled up together. Christmas is also a romantic time of the year, and is known for spending time with loved ones.

My First Idea
I have decided to create a video for my second initial idea - Rihanna's Do Ya Thing. I have decided to choose this song, as after hearing the video, and looking at inspiration from retro videos and pictures which is the effect I would like to use, I think it will go well with this song.
Concept
My first idea for the concept of the video is to have one main actress skipping and parading around the streets of a run down area. Part of the song she will be miming the lyrics, while the other we see her simply having fun and playing up to the camera. I will shoot the video in black and white so it has an old feel to it and will try and use an old film-like effect where the camera jumps around and flickers.
Parts of the video will also feature signs/symbols or lyrics written down from the song, like the ones in the Cheryl Cole lyric video. This will feasible as these are a quick and easy to create, and they are a good way of filling up time while still looking professional if I can't film enough material.
Location
I would like a really run down area so the video has the vintage feel. The type of scenes that I am thinking about is old back streets with lots of graffiti or busy streets as they have that old retro street style. Currently I am thinking of places up London, such as Camden Town, as it is known for its daring street style.
I think by creating a video outside, its more achievable as its free of cost and there will be plenty of places up London that have the right look that I would like to create.

The type of clothing I would like my actress to wear is really retro yet edgy clothing. All my inspiration for clothing has come from Rihanna's retro style photo shoot wear she is wearing dungarees and a bandanna.
Also as the song is about loving someone for who they are, and knowing that they love you for who you are, and just enjoying yourself, I want this message to come through the video. The styling is very important, as the style I have decided to use is quite daring and different, so it gives out the message that 'this is who I am, love me for me'. Also the style is very experimental and fun which is also the message of the song.
