Different Types of Music Video

There are four different types of music videos. These are;

1. Performance based
2. Narrative based
3. Concept based
4. Animation

A performance based music video is usually a video that contains the band or artist, in which they are performing their music to the viewer.  The star image of the artist, which is one of Andrew Goodwin's six key points, is usually reinforced in this time of video as an artist or a band perform their song themselves, so are featured a lot during the video, so lots of close up camera shots of them are used.

A narrative based is when the music video has a storyline that fits in with the lyrics or the theme of the song. Although these can be entertaining as it tells a story, sometimes these videos can be similar to others, and most time you can predict what will happen. For example, a love song that has a narrative music video will most of the time feature a male and a female showing that they are in love and singing about one another.

Concept based is a video that has no connection to the song. It's just one idea that they use through out the song, and is often very random. Concept based videos can often be very amusing, as like narrative based videos, you can't always predict what the video will be like, and it gives the artist or band a chance to be creative and bring out new ideas. Refering to Andrew Goodwin's theory, there is usually not relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.

Animation is created using computers, and is very unique, as fewer music videos use animation.  Artists or bands now take a chance and have their whole video animated, and they do not feature in it at all, or just partly animated.
